Tom contrasting with Gatsby
Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby were two very contrasting characters. The way they were both perceived by society was completely different but yet the way they lived was almost identical. Tom and Jay were both brought up in two very different settings which impacted the way they acted throughout the novel. Money, power, and love are what controlled their actions. The most noticeable difference between Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby are their perceptions from society. Tom had inherited his fortune and really hasn't worked a day in his life. Gatsby on the other hand worked for his fortune and had followed the American Dream. He was born into a poor farming family, and he had made the decision that he was not going to live like this early in his life. From the text we understand that Gatsby was involved in bootlegging alcohol. Even though Gatsby struck it rich and had bought a huge gothic mansion in West Egg he was still looked down upon as if he wasn't worthy of it, especially by To
Tom is different in the fact that he would do whatever was necessary to satisfy his needs, for instance his unfaithfulness toward Daisy. For instance Tom has had a long term ongoing affair with a woman named Myrtle and Gatsby hasn't seen or even talked to her for years upon years. He had grown up to be a brutal vicious bully. Although I got the impression she loves his money even more. Tom is married to her and Gatsby has obsessed over her ever since he left for the military. Tom does this simply to satisfy his own needs. Daisy is shocked to see how wealthy he is, and she appears to have fallen in love with Jay Gatsby once again. Later in the novel Nick, Daisy's cousin, sets Daisy up to have tea with Gatsby. Daisy never did love Tom, she only married him because of his social class. Over time Daisy's love for Gatsby diminished and she felt it was time to move on. Because the way Tom was brought up he lives life the way he wants to live it and has no concern for others. Gatsby's attitude toward life was very humble and ambitious. Another similarity between the two is their love for Daisy. Gatsby's satisfaction came with being with Daisy. Daisy Fay was the woman that brought these two characters together.
