Watergate Scandal

             On the surface the political career of President Richard Nixon it would not seem out of the ordinary from the career of any other politician in history. That is to say, up until the advent of the hugely publicized Watergate scandal, during which he became the first U.S. chief executive to resign from office, earning himself the title of "one of the most controversial politicians of the twentieth century." The scandal unfolded after the arrest of buglers in the Watergate office building in Washington, D.C., in which accusations traveled their way up the political latter until eventually resting at the desk of the president. When Watergate was initially exposed in 1972 the nation immediately began feeling the direct effects caused by a scandalous presidency. However many will tell you that this event, still being fairly recent history, still effects our politics and society today. This scandal was said to have both positive and negative effects, but in my own opinion I feel that the positive far outweighed the negative.
             There is no arguing that there are many different aspects to the Watergate scandal that affect us even today. Initially there were a variety of reforms that emerged from the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, which did such things as enacting codes of conduct and placing limits on campaign contributions. However when choosing the most significant aspect I would have to agree with the political scholars who present the idea that this event worked to exemplify the effectiveness of the American political system. These scholars couldn't be more right, this is something that will, historically, be beneficial for years to come, allowing future generations of Americans to rest assure that when our political system was faced with a problem it was able to tackle it head on and continue moving in a positive direction.
