A Sand County Almanac

The first section of the book is where he includes his observations from his farm through the different months of the year. This section of the book was my favorite to read. This section jumped right in and began with January and went through the months in order. It was from the very first section of the book that Leopold’s sense of observation struck me. He takes notice of every aspect of nature around him from hawks soaring above head to tiny skunk tracks in the snow. Every part of nature he records is done with pure admiration in his eyes and he is able to transfer that admiration to the reader. I have found myself

I thought this section was disheartening because Leopold brings to light just how much damage we are doing to the land and that we don’t even know that we are destroying our heritage. recently looking at and listening to nature with new eyes and ears. Leopold discusses that we have set aside land for “wilderness” and to preserve the land then we build roads through it to make it easily accessible for recreation purposes which destroys the “wilderness” that we were trying to preserve. Once the predators were gone the herds of grazers like deer and elk got out of control and foraged the land till it was nearly barren.

The third section of this book deals largely with the idea that we are destroying our wilderness for recreation. Even though in this case the human race didn’t damage the land directly their actions still had a major impact. Closely related, he discusses that we have driven nearly all of the grizzly bears out of the continental U. My favorite story out of this section was about the bus ride through Illinois. Through this book he discussed many changes, most in the negative direction, that he observed during his 61 years he was here. After I read this book I would have thought that he lived to be a much older man than 61 just because of all of the experiences he writes about. By removing too many predators we caused a catastrophic chain of events. The second part of this book was about places that Leopold had been that in one way or another were special enough for him to include in this book. He reminisces a lot about days gone by and changes that have made an impact on our mother earth. Since the land is near barren now the herds either died of starvation or had to move on.

Leopold was born in 1887 and died in 1948.
