A Force to be Reckoned With
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away lived a group of fans who underneath it all were more than just fans. There is only one thing that differs about this: these fans are not far, far away. Some of these fans are family members, or a best friend to someone. Or perhaps maybe even a member of a college freshmen English class. They travel hundreds of miles to meet and spend time with their other die hard fans and memorize the movies in full. They can tell you everything that has happened and is going to happen in the Star Wars universe. They devote most of the time, free or not, to being part of one of the largest subcultures in the world. When a movie company decides to produce a movie they are risking many important financial and social things in the process. They take in to account how the money will be distributed, if the movie will be successful and if the public will like it. When on is creating a movie entitled Star Wars, you don't have either of these to worry about. The first trilogy alone has amassed an amazing amount of money through sales of movies, rentals, and memorabilia. More money than the closest four grossing movies combined. I am not a diehard fanatic of Star Wars but I have come to see that these people are not obsessed. It's this attitude that has created a subculture from a simple love of a movie. If a guest isn't wearing Star Wars garb to the event, they won't be shunned away, but they probably will be the only one at the convention without a costume. It puts you in a new world when you are sitting down watching it all unfold. These fans have indeed formed there own subculture around something that enables them to grow and be happy. In these online clubs, one can rummage through old collectibles, and figure out all the flaws the movies contain. People might laugh at him as he walks down the hallway of his high school in his full-length Yoda robe but he is certainly not alone. They duel with weapons as well as their intellect and sense of imagination. So maybe these "freaks" aren't so freaky after all. " (Ellison) Daniel's devotion has earned him the nickname Skywalker among his peers. "I once sat down and tried to compile the glitches together and make my own short movie. as a fan, but it is quite another story to worship them as if they were sent by the divine. In order to join a certain Star Wars fan club, one must recite lines from the movies without hesitation and say an oath to the allegiance of all Star Wars fans (Brooker 54). All across the world, kids and adults a like marvel over this incredible Star Wars double trilogy.
