Thoughts Concerning Other People
Sartre said, "Hell is other people," while Streisand sang, "People who need people are the luckiest people in the world." With whom do you agree? The two phrases "Hell is other people" and "People who need people are the luckiest people in the world" are at such extremes that one could disagree with both altogether. Sartre's words seem to suggest that people, besides oneself, is the definition of Hell. This could be inferred as the natural tendencies of people, the actions of people, or the ideas of people, and how all of these can af
While I may not agree entirely with Sartre, I do disagree entirely with Streisand. Barbara Streisand, however, is an entertainer in a capitalist society. Her words are based purely on her own emotions towards other, but may have simply been used as tools to further her career as an entertainer, so that she would not lose her position of fame and fortune. I don't believe that a person should ever need to completely rely on another. In order to choose between the two phrases, one should also look at the person who spoke the words and the motivations behind them. I don't necessarily agree that other people are the definition of Hell, but that Hell can be created as a result of the actions of certain people. I personally agree more with the words of Sartre than those of Streisand. Such relationships between people could create a positive and productive community, but such a community would be open to corruption and disaster. By relying on others, one could find oneself in a very undesirable situation if anything were to happen to the dependable. One such example is that of war, where the actions of one person, or group of people, can cause the deaths of millions. His words were results of deep thoughts and concerns for his country and its people. Streisand's words, on the other hand, suggest that people should open up to one another and depend on one another. Jean-Paul Sartre was a novelist, essayist, and playwright who used his words to persuade the French public to look to any means necessary to attain French liberty.
