The Beatles
Events Leading Up To The Beatles Coming to AmericaIn mid 1963, The Beatles were at the top of the England's music scene with hit songs such as "Please Please Me", "From Me To You" and "She Loves You". Beatlemania was at its full swing all over the country. "With The Beatles", their second album, was released on November 22nd, 1963 and went straight to number one on the charts. Consequently, this brought down the previous number one album, "Please Please Me", which was their debut album released earlier in the year. These two albums went on to set a record that no other artist has come anywhere near: fifty consecutive weeks at the number one spot (20 weeks for "Please Please Me" and 21 weeks for "With The Beatles").By the end of 1963 the Beatles had overwhelmed the British pop scene and media in way that had never happened before and is unlikely to occur ever again. However, this was only happening in Britain. Brian Epstein, the manager of the Beatles, knew that the next big step for the Beatles is to gain the same popularity in America as in Britain. The one main reason why the Beatles has not gain as much attention as they were getting in Britain was that Capitol Records in America did not want to release anythin
George Martin eventually found a small independent label in Chicago, Vee Jay Records, to release all the Beatles' singles. Their reasoning behind the rejections was that Americans would not be interested in a Rock & Roll band from Britain. Capitol was then forced to rush released the "I Want To Hold Your Hand" single and the album "Meet the Beatles" in the United States. The Beatles Conquer America, First Visit To U. The broadcast of the show was from the hotel's Mau Mau Club. As the Beatles climbed down the steps from the plane, they were greeted by 5000 screaming teenagers. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was one of the records that were brought back. On January 16th, Brian Epstein received a telegram from Capitol Records in New York. After a day of rehearsing, and recording materials for a later broadcast on the 23rd, the Ed Sullivan Show began at 8:00pm. The Beatles were to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show to perform for the first time in America. The Beatles could not leave their hotel because of all the fans outside. The next day, they went to New York City to play two concerts at Carnegie Hall for $7,000. The show was then interrupted by a telegram from Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker wishing them success on their first visit to America.
