'Imaginative journeys always transform us in someway'.
Transformation due to the undertaking of an imaginative journey is a certainty for every person. After an imaginative journey the mind frame of the person who undertook the journey has altered due to a new understanding, therefore they are unable to return to the same mind frame that they previously had. Similarly, the imaginative journey that Coleridge embarks on during the poem Frost at Midnight transforms his mind. Coleridge begins the journey enclosed and pessimistic although after the speculation of his child's future he becomes optimistic and open minded. However, in Margaret Atwood's poem Journey to the Interior no imaginative journey is undertaken, rather the speculation of obstacles that can prevent discovering the inspiration for a journey into the imagination occurs and results in the lack of her transformation. Peter Howitt's Sliding Doors focus on the imaginative speculation about what the future could hold if a split-second moment took you down one path rather than another. The main character diverges into parallel storylines and is transformed due to the different experiences she undergoes after missing or catching a train. Through these three pieces it is evident that after the imagination is summoned and a journey
The colours in this scene are ashen colours, black and denim, with the use of minimal light. Gwyneth Paltrow stars as Helen Quilley whose life splits in two divergent paths due to the difference between catching and not catching a tube train. This deliberate lack of punctuation demonstrates the idea that there is no ending and possibilities are endless once a journey into the imagination is instigated. The reader is forced to pause and consider Coleridge's confined childhood in the city as well as the benefits of raising a child in a country environment. This imagery of physical impediments prevents Atwood from undertaking a journey due to perceiving it to be too harsh an experience. Thus begins the speculation of Helen's journey and the transformation of Paltrow's character. Reality is resurfaced when Coleridge directs his imagination to his sleeping 'babe so beautiful', and begins to speculate about his child's future. In one reality, Helen manages to slip through the doors before they close, and in the other, the doors slide shut and she misses the train. Atwood begins imagining the wild landscape that can pose as an obstacle. This remembrance of his schooling years at boarding school is presented by Coleridge as a detrimental experience for him. Due to Coleridge's initiation of a journey into the imagination in Frost at Midnight, Coleridge's learns how to expand his mind, transforming from a cynical ruminator to an enthusiastic speculator. Furthermore, the use of the oxymoron 'net of air' illustrates the idea that a person can be physically obstructed, as even air seems to constrict. but thou, my babe! shalt wander like a breeze'. In one scene, the Helen that missed the train is working as a waitress.
