New Simplistic Life: Analysis of Hemingway\'s Soldier\'s Home
During the war the harshest acts can be witnessed, some of which can seem unfathomable, causing changes in those people exposed to them. Hemingway's short story, "Soldier's Home," includes many examples of what war can do to a young person exposed to the harshest of environments. Harold Krebs was a young college boy who went to war from him Methodist college. When he returned home two years later, he had undergone many changes. As a result of war, Krebs had lost all faith, he no longer could love, and he had resorted back to a more simplistic perception of life and relationships. If he were to indulge back into his life, as it was before he left for war, it would be full of complications about politics, consequences, and lies. Their job does not require their thought or opinion, they do as they are told, and that is that. Krebs did not have to think of analyzing anything about what he did during the war, he did as he was told and that was what "they" wanted. He did not need girls as other men did, jobs were of no worry to him, and all in all he did not need anything besides the things to keep him alive. The atrocities he had seen could surely drive any man insane, but if no thought is given to it that all should be well. He has no animosity towards anyone, but he realizes that feeling leaves people vulnerable. He did not need to feel, nor love or be loved, there was no need for it. A soldier's job is clear and simple. The war made him hard because it was the only way for him to protect himself. These actions showed Krebs bringing the simplicity of war back home with him.
