The Day Without Emotion

There's a pink pill for depression. There's a blue pill for anxiety. There's also a violet pill for stress. Put them all together and you will have a two hundred dollar anti-emotion pill. As years of scientific research turn into a matter of days, new medicines are being researched and produced to rid our natural ways, i.e. our natural emotions. To put it mildly, these drugs are violating our humanity. The day we rid human emotion with drugs is the day we live in a brave new world where no one emphasizes the true value of emotion. In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, soma is a drug that people take in half-gram tablets to get away from emotional discomfort. Essentially, it makes every bad emotion go away and makes the person's life seem extremely wonderful. It's around all of the time just like mints or gum in today's world. However, soma doesn't just freshen people's breath. Unlike mints and gum, soma causes everybody in the brave new world to be "doped up," or, as the inhabitants in the Brave New World novel say, "soma holiday."

Nervous, or just full of anxiety? Take an anxiety relief. If people begin to ignore true humanity and turn completely to drugs to hide away their emotions, then as in the Brave New World Mustapha Mond would say, '[T]here's always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patent and longsuffering'(244). Who would really want to? In other words, today's world will always advance in technology, it's how it will advance is what matters. Therefore, as Mustapha Mond in the Brave New World would say, '[W]e can't allow science to undo its own good work'(234). We have our cookbooks, also known as pharmaceutical companies, Bayer and Pfitzer, and they advance in new anti-emotion medicines everyday. However, they're not just ridding emotion, they're dangerously making more emotion. However, after reviewing how far we've come with medicines, we are finding new ways to hide emotion. " In comparison to our world, Huxley's Brave New World contained a most particular character that was known as World Controller Mustapha Mond. Before today's world turns into Aldous Huxley's brave new world, before drugs control and hide emotions, people will emphasize the true value of emotion before creating tomorrows emotionless world. According to a Newsweek article (April 5, 2004), "the popularity of antidepressants has exploded. Thirty million Americans, including 10 million kids, take the drugs. In late March, "the FDA announced that antidepressants, the very drug that were supposed to lift patients out of emotional danger, might cause some of them to worsen and even turn suicidal in the first few weeks of therapy. Getting to the point, some of these medicines may be needed today, however, as more and more of them are created, today's world is transforming into Huxley's Brave New World. " The FDA also stated that "[k]ids on the antidepressants are extra vulnerable.
