To Kill A Mocking Bird

             Courage is a precious gift. It can be helpful at times and other times harmful. Courage is one of the most important aspects of life. In the novel, To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee the main character Atticus Finch displays courage when he decides to defend Tom Robinson, to raise his children as a single parent, and to smother the flame of his anger over the Robert Ewell's threat. In general, it takes a truly strong man to have enough courage to overcome the pressures of his society, and his personal circumstance. Atticus Fich was such a man.
             Atticus Finch demonstrates courage while defending a black man in the trial. There are several important factors that indicate Atticus as being courageous. One is that, during this period of time in 1930's, prejudice and racism is reigning in American society, who are mainly against the black people. However Atticus is willing to defend a black American living in Maycomb, Alabama who has few rights and only a basic living standards. Atticus does this fully aware that the justice system does not treat black citizens fairly. In addition, Atticus is willing to reveal the truth about the situation happened Between Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell to the people of Maycomb who are ignorant. This is very important because in reality the verdict of guilty is wrong. Also, Atticus's belief regarding courage is seen in his actions. Atticus says, "Fight with your own head instead of using your fists". As a result, this is what he does in the courtroom, which teaches his children that the power of the mind is stronger than the power of their fists. Finally, Atticus illustrates courage when he chooses to defend Tom Robinson.
