Different approaches to life in poetry
With reference to 'Ulysses,' To my Children Unknown, produced by Artificial Insemination' & 'Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward,' explore the way each poet deals with the theme of different approaches to life.'Ulysses,' 'To my Children Unknown, Produced by Artificial Insemination' and 'Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward,' all have the same theme of 'Life as a Journey.' 'Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward' is the journey for the mother who is about to give up her child for adoption. 'To my Children Unknown, Produced by Artificial Insemination' is the beginning of a journey when life begins for children who are conceived through a sperm donation. It is the journey in between the other two poems as it goes through stages, from childhood and adulthood. 'Ulysses' is a reflection of life, with an elderly king who still wants to discover new things and go on adventures of self-knowledge as well as metaphorical journeys until he dies. Each poem deals with life in different perspectives.Ulysses wants to push death away and to live forever. He wants to live out each single moment of life and in fact live forever. 'I cannot rest from travel: I will drink Life to the lees...' This quote shows that Ulysses wants to keep on trave
Ulysses' final words in the poem show the challenges he faces and shows that he lives life well and how he wants. 'Ulysses believes that age does not prevent someone from doing something useful. 'Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward' is a journey of a single mother who has just had an illegitimate child. Old age does not get Ulysses down, "age does not weary him. Ulysses knows he cannot regain his youth and he has learned to accept who and how he is. 'Ulysses' is about an ageing king who wants to 'live life to the full,' he wants to keep on learning new things until he dies. 'To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield. The hardness of the 'enamel' doctors and nurses means the young mother is made pay for the rejection that she in fact feels. 'Ulysses,' 'Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward' and 'To My Children Unknown, Produced by Artificial Insemination' all have themes that 'life is a journey'. There are many decisions that you must make that only you can make, not things that just please other people.
