'Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward' is the journey for the mother who is about to give up her child for adoption. 'To my Children Unknown, Produced by Artificial Insemination' is the beginning of a journey when life begins for children who are conceived through a sperm donation. It is the journey in between the other two poems as it goes through stages, from childhood and adulthood. 'Ulysses' is a reflection of life, with an elderly king who still wants to discover new things and go on adventures of self-knowledge as well as metaphorical journeys until he dies. Ulysses knows he cannot regain his youth and he has learned to accept who and how he is. 'Ulysses' is about an ageing king who wants to 'live life to the full,' he wants to keep on learning new things until he dies. 'To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield. The hardness of the 'enamel' doctors and nurses means the young mother is made pay for the rejection that she in fact feels. 'Ulysses,' 'Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward' and 'To My Children Unknown, Produced by Artificial Insemination' all have themes that 'life is a journey'. There are many decisions that you must make that only you can make, not things that just please other people.
