SOCIALLY
Disney has been pleasing many children of many ages and even adults with their lovable stories. One of the main reasons why people go to buy and watch the movies is because the movie contains realistic qualities and the reputation that Disney has made for itself. Disney came out with such stories as Beauty And the Beast, Cinderella, and The Little Mermaid. All of these movies have something in common. They all had the power to bring families together, keep them happy, and fascinated in the storyline. The Little Mermaid is not only a family movie, but has many different social concerns as well, which are interwoven into the storyline. Their story portrays social concerns such as race and ethnicity, gender differences, deviant acts, and have and haves not in the movie. First of all, the movie has many examples of race and ethnicity because the whole story dwells around the plot of underwater creatures wondering about what is above the water and their interest to see what was up there with the "air-breathing creatures." This shows how certain races wonder about how other races are. For example, you wonder about moving to a different country for better life or change from usual life. Also in the movie the under water characters hav
In relation to the book the underwater characters are stereotyped as dumber as and lazier than humans. If she were successful in making the prince kiss her she would be able to marry him. For example, the underwater king can only be king of the underwater and never the land king. The director also let us see the primary assimilation process by getting, Ariel a mermaid from the underwater world and the prince a human, married. This shows different physical characteristics or race. Deviance was used in the movie to create conflict and also create a plot in the movie. By going above land Ariel also defies that norm. For example, Ariel gives up her voice and risks her freedom for the man she loves. In society to go on the evil side is betraying the norm, which is deviance. For example, Ariel makes a pact with the evil witch in order for her to obtain her desire to marry the price on land. For example, Sebastian the crab has a Jamaican accent. They also portray underwater creatures as poor and can't get any food. In society the norm is not to be rebellious and obey your parents. They also show us that one person can hold high status but cannot change their status. Third, the movie presents all the men in the movie as brave strong characters.
