Jackie Robinson: Color Barrier Breaker The argument for integrated sport has always been that interracial teams and events promote better race relations (Hoberman 28). Two factors are generally cited to explain the segregation of sports in the first half of the twentieth century. Most commonly noticed is the desire of whites not to associate with African Americans (Shropshire 31). Because of the racist ideas and actions that were promoted during the first half of the twentieth century, there were many racist stereotypes that were created. One African American sports hero, Jackie Robinson, created an enormous impact on the role of African Americans in sports. He is known as a great baseball player, revolutionist, and person. Despite all of the racist stereotypes that one would think he would match up to, Jackie Robinson is a great African American who, despite all of his hardships involving racism, changed the beliefs of many people. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and forever changed American society through the game of baseball. Just after Jackie and his wife sat down in their seats and fell fast asleep, the driver gestured to them, indicating that they were to move to the back of the bus. Jackie Robinson is a revolutionist. Things like "They're waiting for you in the jungles, black boy!" and "Go back to the bushes!" were shouted at Robinson as he stood over the plate in the first inning (173). If we fail, no one will try it again for twenty years. Integrating the game of baseball was the most controversial sports development in the 20th century. He just stood silently as racial insults were hurled at him by his teammates, opponents, and from people in the stands. Jackie Robinson was discovered by one of Branch Rickey's scouts at a Negro League baseball game. Thanks to Jackie Robinson, there are/were greats such as Martin Luther King Jr. One of the newsmen asked Jackie what he would do if a pitcher threw at his head. Jackie helped pave the way for the integration of other sports.
