Biases
When I sat down to write this paper about a personal bias I might have, I really wanted to convince myself that I wasn't biased towards anything, but that just isn't so. Unfortunately, I believe that everyone is biased against one thing or another. There would be no such thing as wars if everyone got along and wasn't biased towards others. While growing up many of us were exposed to biased people. Their beliefs tend to stick with us, and we end up passing them on to others. First off, I find myself to be biased against Spanish speaking individuals who refuse to learn English. I like, and am friends with several Spanish speaking people, however I find it repulsive that they come to our country without any intensions of learning English. I, the American living in the United States, have to take three executive years of Spanish in school in order to graduate. Those who speak Spanish do not have to learn English, and often refuse to even though they are living in a English speaking country. I also find it insulting that when I walk into a grocery store, all of the instructions and labels on products are in Spanish. It also bothers me that whether I am speaking to a sales clerk at a clothing store, or an employee at Publi
There are very few Jewish people in the Fort Myers area and as soon as people found out that I was Jewish people treated me very differently. I am now trying to accept everyone for who they are, and remind myself that not everyone is perfect. I never felt so hurt before and saddened by how prejudice people can really be. I am most likely biased against those who speak Spanish and are unwilling to learn English because around half of the population in Florida is comprised of people of Spanish speaking decent. Several of my family members live in Miami where Spanish is the most common spoken language, and ever since I was a little girl I heard them complaining about it. After having it drilled in my head constantly that those who speak Spanish should learn English, is the most probable reason why I am still biased against them . x they cant even answer a question that I might have because they do not speak English. I would like to conclude by stating that it is the differences among people that make the world go round. Just because some people are afraid to walk near African Americans at night thinking that they might get shot doesn't mean that every black person is dangerous. I have lived most of my life in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Everybody should be treated equally. The Spanish speaking issue has been on my mind for several years, and it wasn't until I moved to Fort Myers that I got a different perspective on things. Look at Martin Luther King, he was an African American who wanted equality. Throughout the city that we live in there are many Italians, Hispanics, Jews, Catholics, etc. If we allowed them to become United States Citizens, why should they have different rights then we do? It is also unfair that it is almost impossible now to get a job if you do not speak Spanish fluently.
