Lame essay
"Greasy Lake" is a dark short story based mainly on setting that in my opinion has hints of comedy sprinkled throughout it. With a straight forward plot we are sucked into this story about a few young fellows who one night pay the consequences for pretty much doing the wrong thing at the wrong time. As I said before, the story "Greasy Lake" relies heavily on setting. This story and the word dark are pretty much synonyms, it all takes place at night in a place not too inhabited nor lighted. We are never told exactly what year the story takes place, but I would say it takes place in the late 80's or early 90's, I take that from the subject matter and just the feel of the story. Boyle writes, "Now it was fetid and murky, the mud banks glittering with broken glass and strewn with beer cans and the charred remains of bonfires (144). The lake is located near the edge of town, far off from the main population. I'm not exactly positive why Boyle calls the story "Greasy Lake", but I get the idea that it can come from the confrontation that the three characters have with the thug down at the lake. The protagonist often refers to the antagonist as "greasy". "The greasy character was unimpressed
Khe Sahn was a place in Vietnam that was attacked by Viet Cong causing the general to defend it and risk lives for little importance. The characters speak like people speak today, not like our grandparents or great grandparents spoke. We are told that Digby and Jeff can roll joints with the best of them, which I feel is one of the darkly comedic references that Boyle sprinkles throughout his story. The three nineteen year-olds go down to the lake pretty much because everyone else does and as a lot of kids feel these days, they just want to fit in. the stories in Greasy Lake display vibrant sensibility fully engaged with American society-and with the wonder and joy defiantly remain a part of our culture as well" (Short Story Criticism, p. The impression that I got from reading the story was that young people in town just went to the lake to hang out and get away from their parents and do things that aren't very bright, for example: smoking pot, and drinking large amounts of alcohol. The characters in the story are not described in extreme detail so they are flat characters. I see this as hopefully more reason for the narrator to think about the things he has done and is doing and start getting his life together. But without keys, this is impossible. All of this is due to the fact that the author of the story, T. Which is sometimes hard to understand for people of my age. The characters in the story try to act badder than they really are.
