Arnold Schwarzenegger

             He is most well known for catch-phrases like "I'll be back" and "Hasta la vista, baby" but acting is only one dimension of Arnold Schwarzenegger's life. Long before his successful movie career he was a world champion athlete who came to this country in search of the American Dream.
             Arnold arrived in America as a young immigrant with little money and a lot of ambition. Within a few years, he showed the world that the first step to fame and fortune is taking control of one's self. He sculpted his body into a championship symbol of power. He turned bodybuilding into a competitive sport, and he made it popular among men and women looking for new ways to find strength and health.
             As we will see today, Arnold has pumped himself out of the fitness movement, into the movies, and now he's continuing to move by attempting to change his address from Hollywood to Sacramento in his newest career endeavor.
             On July 30, 1947 Arnold was born in the tiny village of Thal-By-Graz, Austria. He grew up poor, living in medieval-like conditions. Arnold was raised alongside his older brother Meinhard in a strict, Catholic household.
             As a child, Arnold spent many hours in a movie theater watching Hercules films that starred various bodybuilders. At the time, Arnold was active in soccer, but soon abandoned the sport to pursue bodybuilding. Arnold's infatuation with America further cemented his resolve. "It was a very American sport, and I thought, 'If I do well, it could take me to America'" (Hoberman, 1991, p. 23).
             Bodybuilding became an obsession to Arnold. He worked out seven days a week, at least three hours per day. At the age of eighteen Arnold enlisted in the Austrian Army for his mandatory one-year service. Once Arnold completed his year of service in the military, he went on to win a string of titles in Europe, including The Mr. Universe title.
