Character analysis of Dr. Charles Dunford

             In the short story "A visit to grandmother" by William Melvin Kelley there is a character named Dr. Charles Dunford, " a man so kind that when people ventured timidly into his office it took only a few words to make them relax and even laugh"(Kelley 167). This is an excellent example of direct characterization, Kelley makes him seem so happy on the outside, but he's actually very unhappy inside. He lives in New York with his three children, Charles jr.(Chig), Peter, and Bonnie. Chig was older than his brother and sister, he was seventeen years old. Dr. Charles was going to be attending his twentieth year college class reunion in Nashville, and he invited his son chig to go along with him. Chig had nothing else to do that summer so he agreed to go with his father.
             The reunion lasted about a week, but as they were packing to come home Charles suggested that they go and visit his mother and brothers. To chig the reunion seemed like it was just an excuse to drive down and see his family. Charles never really talked about his family much, except for his brother GL. He had left home when he was only fifteen years old. When they got there they went inside and Chig saw sitting on the couch an old woman, his grandmother. She hadn't recognized them at first because she hasn't seen them since Chig was a baby, but when she did she hugged Charles very tightly, and he cringed when she did.
             Chig and Mama sat and talked for a long time, Charles spoke only when he was spoken to. He felt like he was just a child again, sitting there while Mama talks to her guests. Over dinner mama was telling a story about how Charles brother GL had traded a chair for a wild horse. He and Mama went riding in it, against Mama's instincts, and it got out of control and Mama had to help GL stop it. When she was finished telling the story she asked Charles if he remembered, but he said he had left home by then. He said it in the most emotionless but yet angry...
