Georgia O'Keefe
"Precisionist," is the term most widely used to describe Georgia O'Keeffe's work. O'Keeffe's great clarity in painting is what identifies her well-known paintings of urban architecture, mountains, bones, and flowers. The simple, clear forms in her masterpieces "made her a pioneer of a new modernism in the USA." Although O'Keeffe used her subject matter representationaly, the "starkly linear quality, the thin, clear coloring, and boldly patterned compositions," give the effect of an abstract design. " O'Keeffe began a series of abstract charcoal drawings and sent them to a past classmate of hers, Alfred Stieglitz, who exhibited ten of these pieces. After being given art lessons at home as a child her artistic talent was discovered and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Art Student League in New York. O'Keeffe has become recognized as one of America's most important and successful artists. It reminded me of O'Keeffe's enlarged flower paintings and the comment she made about making people focus on something's beauty. In the process of selecting the image to paint I was struck by an up close, detailed picture of a human eye. At first glance, the viewer may not even realize my painting is an eye. While O'Keeffe was at school she was taught to mimic the styles of realism but soon realized she "could never achieve distinction working within this tradition. I personally think that O'Keeffe was an artistic genius. " After taking a suggestion from Wesley Dow, an artist and art educator at Teacher's College, she started creating art again, this time as "an attempt to discover a personal language through which she could express her own feelings and ideas. O'Keeffe inspired me attempt her style because she has done so much for the world of art, and I find her paintings to be some of the most beautiful works of art I have ever seen. Georgia O'Keeffe was born in 1887, as the second of seven children, on a farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
