Edgar Allan Poe is today known as one of the most prominent writers during the 19th century. Many of us know him as a critic, poet and a novelist. However, he was also a language-maker and exalter of 'the power of words" during his lifetime. Perhaps this is the most obvious proof, I believe, that makes it easy to understand why his works has such a unique style. Poe self claimed that all his work was constructed upon certain predefined rules (Norton, 714). This made many contemporary authors claim that Poe had not the mind for poetry but the soul. In this essay, my aim is to study Poe's tales of horror. I will do this by focusing on his style, language, characters, themes and symbols. The two main questions I will build this essay upon will be; what is it that makes the stories horrible and which technique is Poe using to entice the reader into his stories?Edgar Allan Poe, son of Actress Eliza Poe and Actor David Poe J., was born 19th of January 1809. Poe and his brother and sister were orphaned before Poe's third birthday and Poe was moved to John and Allan in Richmond. In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia. He was an outstanding student and excelled in various
In the end, it most likely comes back to Poe's belief that man must ultimately answer to himself and his own subconscious for any actions he takes. Characters are put into unusual situations as the reader follows their feelings of evil and guilt. The narrator often seems to have some type of psychological problems and insanity is one of them. Works citedThe Norton Anthology of American Literature, Shorter Forth Ed. The boundaries which divide Life from Death are best shadowy and vague. Another thing that is also typical for many of Poe's characters are that they often have narrators that feel extreme hate or extreme love for another character in the story. Total annihilation could be no more. The narrator becomes somewhat possessed with the hate for the cat. The reader is then able to experience all the confusion and anxiety that the narrator is feeling. Afterwards, the narrator does not even feel remorse for the wrongful death of his wife. David Herbert Lawrence writes in his book Modern Critical Views on Edgar Allan Poe that hate is inordinate as live to the characters in Poe's Story. " (The Critical Heritage, 184) The Power of WordsPoe's was totally devoted to language-making during his lifetime. " (Norton, 716) In the book The Critical Essay I found several letters from journals and newspapers that with beautiful words tried to describe Poe's style;Mr Poe is familiar to us as a poet of considerably power. (Norton, 718) This characteristic associated with Poe's writings was shaped by many tragedies in his life, such as abandonment of his father, untimely death's of his mother, brother, wife, and other loved one's, and the problems he faced with his adoptive father.
