Odysseus
Odysseus is a man of exploration since he is always traveling and investigating his surroundings. Although he says that wandering is the worst thing for a man, he himself has a never-ending curiosity that drives him into exploring land that has never been heard of or seen before. What made Odysseus stand out as an ultimate figure in history is the fact that he was not only a man who has traveled a lot and has great experience, but he is also a man who has endured the pain and suffering to gain such knowledge. Odysseus is simply a man of voyage, investigation, and wisdom. He is a leader of leaders who had always been greatly concerned with his men. He was the one who encouraged and guided these men through their great adventures although all them died by the end of the journey. The death of these men had always been of a natural cause or their own negligence and never their leader's carelessness. His great determination to not fail in his objective of arriving home, which partly was led by his ego, gave him reason to lie and risk the lives of his own men. Odysseus was warned not to eat any of the cattle and had warned his men also not to do so. However, Odysseus was not able to get away from Scylla who ate six of his men with its six mouths. However, after the wind had died, they were stranded on the island for about a month and had run out of food leaving the men starving. The negligence of Odysseus's men was sometimes the cause of their death. A good example would be when he reached Ithaca and disguised himself as a beggar until the best moment to reveal himself and slay the suitors. The men could not handle it anymore and when Odysseus went to sleep they slaughtered some of the cattle. Going through the strait without getting harmed was impossible but the ship manages to maneuver around the Charybdis. He was known for being a person who hesitates before doing anything since he always reasoned and evaluated his actions. However, some aspects of Odysseus' character were not so good, such as his extreme sense of pride that actually leads to many of the problems that he faces. An example of nature taking away the lives of those men traveling with Odysseus comes from the fifth part of Odysseus' journey, which takes place at the strait where Scylla and Charybdis live. The value of his knowledge differs from others because he had to gain his knowledge by traveling and exploring that sometimes required him to endure pain and suffering. His patience has saved him several times during his journey. Scylla, a six-headed monster, lived above the cliffs in a cave on one side of the strait where Charybdis was a brutal whirlpool on the other side of the strait. ure and negligence take the lives of Odysseus' men.
