Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858, the second of four brothers and sisters. Although blessed with a quick mind he was not blessed with a strong body. He suffered from life-threatening asthma attacks throughout his childhood. Urged on by his father, Theodore began to build up his body by strenuous exercise, and by adulthood he had become a model of physical courage and toughness. This early example of his character was critical of the way he lived the rest of his life. To this day Theodore Roosevelt is remembered as one of the strongest and most vigorous presidents in United States history. Anxious to prove himself under fire, Roosevelt resigned as assistant secretary of the Navy in April to organize the "Rough Riders". He loved spending time with his children and the country became familiar with Alice, Theodore Jr. Then on September 6, 1901, in McKinley was shot by an assassin in Buffalo, New York. While there he discovers 13,000 plant and animal specimens, which are given to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. It was a landslide victory for McKinley and Roosevelt. He then went to London to marry Edith Carow, with whom he had four sons and a daughter. Soon after the election Teddy goes to Africa on a yearlong safari. When the 1908 election comes Roosevelt decides not to run again and he nominates William Howard Taft for President, who later wins. Roosevelt remained active to the end and died in his sleep at his Oyster Bay home in 1919.
