RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN HUMAN SOCIETY

As an individual living in the world, human beings are associated with all types of relationships. In these intertwined connections, women and men, sister and sister, human and God are three of the examples that are dramatically demonstrated through The Color Purple directed by Steven Spielberg and Elizabeth directed by Shekhar Kapur. Through different types of relationships, people discover their true identities and values. Celie experiences oppressions by her husband Mr.____ and finally gains courage to fight back through the help of Shug Avery. In The Color Purple, Mr.____ initially treats the protagonist Celie as no more than an object. He beats her like an animal and shows no human connection, even during sex. Mr. ____'s harsh treatment of Celie spurs her development. Instilled by Shug Avery, Celie's newfound confidence combines with her anger, which culminates in her angry denunciation of Mr.____ in front of the others at dinner.

Yet, they confront and solve similar problems, such as the oppression of women by men, the relationship between sisters, and as well as the conflict between religions. To Celie, God is her subconscious belief who helps her in the interior and supports her during the hard times. All of them are caught and put into death by commit treason. n Elizabeth is also repressed by her court men during her early ruling years. With the help of her allegiant advisor, Sir Francis Walsingham, the enemies to both England and Elizabeth are rid; as a result, Queen Elizabeth secures her power and becomes one of the greatest rulers of England. In Elizabeth, many of the English court men do not acknowledge their young queen since Elizabeth is a woman and also a heretic. In The Color Purple, the tie between Celie and Nettie is very strong and powerful; neither the great distance nor the oceans can break them apart. Having a new heretic queen means the supersedure of their old beliefs and the acceptance of a new belief. Conversely, the Duke of Norfolk and some court men lose lives due to the determination to protect their own religion. Both movies prove the importance of balancing different types of relationships and the discovery of oneself throughout the relationships. Even though the sisters have been separated for almost twenty years, their hearts are still with each other and will always be as stable as one. In the early parts of the movie The Color Purple, Celie writes letters to God; she sees God as her listener and helping hand. In order to maintain Catholicism the national belief of England, these court men plan secretly to overtake Queen Elizabeth's throne.
