Without Seeing The Dawn

The story starts by describing the main character, Carding. At age eighteen, he had been fully grown as a very strong man. As the only son of Juan Suerte, he helps his father plow the land that they are tending to form their landlord Don Diego. As they lived in one of the suburbs of Iloilo, a barrio named Manhayang in the town of Santa Barbara. They lived a simple life, pasture the carabao and plow the land. Carding as a young lad usually goes out to the river and the field with his cousin Gondong along with their friends Polo, Ruben, Poncing, Isko and Intong. During that old times, the sons are the ones who help their fathers toil the land because farming is their main source of income. While the women stays at home doing household chores along with their daughters. Carding is a favored suitor of Lucia aka Lucing. Lucing is the beautiful daughter of Teniente Paul, the barangay chief of Manhayang. Lucia holds the beauty title as Ms. Barangay Fiesta. Many young men admires Lucia, but Carding won her heart. One night, Carding talked to his father about getting married. At first his father disagreed because Tatay Juan, wants Carding to finish his studies. But since Carding changed his mind, Tata Juan supported his dec


That night when he came home, Carding had a nightmare. He rushed immediately to Carding to inform him that he received a letter. He had tried the purchaser to keep Carding but he was not successful. The Seņor told tatay Juan that Don Diego is disappointed for the performance of harvest of his land. The sad situation reminded the folks about the superstition of raising a house in the month of May. Carding caught the two in a very obscene position with Luis Castro totally naked. Carding once thought that if the little dead child was worth all the things he renounced , his education in the city and other good things that might be his. And as Carding returned to Mahanyang, giving Lucia his assurance that he left the city for good, he was able to speak with representative Sola. Misfortune will hound his heels and he will drink his ill from the cups of misery. Carding will also redeem the parcel of land located in Lakadon which is in mortgage to a money lender name Seņor Arpa for the amount of one hundred pesos. In Lucia, she was once tempted by Luis Castro the son of Don Diego, Carding's landlord. They say that raising a house in the month of May will saddle the owner of that house with ill-luck. For a while carding left his house and stayed in Tatay Juan's place. It was the wedding that even Representative Sola as one of the principal sponsors and sine Teniente Paul does a lot of help for his victory in term of government office.
