Meet the Characters of "The Short Happy Life of Francis Maco

             In Hemingway's short story, "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," the characters are rich and full of life. Like a dance, Hemingway carefully choreographs the characters around each other. Each character, as the story is revealed, is shown with both strengths and weaknesses. The three main characters, Francis and Margot Macomber and Robert Wilson begin the story with a cordial relationship, which deteriorates with Margot and Wilson's blooming relationship.
             By marrying Francis for his money instead of his personality, Margot is an example of modern women. Margot is a demanding woman; she is accustomed to obtaining what she wants, when she wants it. Liking her men to have courage, she discards the cowards in favor of the more courageous. To compensate for her mistake in marrying Francis, Margot flirts with the other stronger and more courageous men, such as Wilson. There are several instances in which Margot gives hints to her liking of Mr. Wilson.
             At the opening of the story, Francis, Margot, and Wilson have returned from a lion hunt and are going to have a drink. Francis suggests drinks such a lemonade or lime juice. In Hemingway's story when Wilson suggests drinking a gimlet, Margot immediately says, "I'll have a gimlet too. I need something" (3). Lynn points out that by indicating that she would rather have a gimlet, Margot shows that she favors Wilson over Francis (432). While they are enjoying their drinks, Margot becomes upset and leaves when they talk about the lion hunt, from which they have returned. When Margot returns, she has a new attitude on the hunting issue. She tells the men, "I've dropped the whole thing. What importance is there to whether Francis is any good at killing lions?
