Napster
Napster is the world's largest file sharing community. Napster enables users to locate and share Digital Music/ MP3 files all from one convenient interface. It also provides music fans with a way to interact with each other over a system of chat rooms and message boards and other venues. Napster's software allows users to log on to its servers and make there personal MP3 collections available to be download by other. Since the companies debut last year, an estimated 20 million people have used Napster's software to download MP3 music files. But recently Napster has been the topic of much concern due to the fact that Napster is assisting in the duplication of copyrighted songs and musical compositions of which the composers hold rights. This caused a series of court cases and ethical banter between Napster and certain musicians that have differing views of Napster's affect on the music industry. The most recent news is that Napster has made peace with some of the record companies since the initial complaints but there are still other companies and music groups that are not ready to settle and accept that Napster will not be shut down. All that Napster does is provide a database to search in. It was mid 1999, and Fanning was sitting around with his friends listening to one of them complain about how hard it was to download music, and it was there that he decided to make a program to make downloading music much easier. Twenty dollars is a lot of money for most, especially if there are only one or two songs favored by the individual consumer. Depending on the speed of your CD-ROM drive the CD Ripper can, and often does, work faster then real-time. MP3's downloaded onto a computer can then be transferred to a MP3 player. So with Napster, individuals benefit greatly economically as long as they do not mind having to listen to these songs at their computer and do not mind that they do no have the actual printed CD with case and booklet, which is only a small sacrifice for free music. Consumers are saving hundreds of dollars by not having to go out and purchase the actual CD. The answer is that every MP3 originates from an audio CD, which is then copied on to a personal computer and transferred into MP3 format, a process referred to as "ripping". " Napster obviously chose to fight this lawsuit and claimed that the court failed to recognize evidence that the site might actually be promoting sales for the music industry. Like JPG, MP3 sound quality is slightly lower then an audio CD, meaning that there is a difference between the final sound and the source. Bertelsmann will drop its previously launched lawsuit against Napster once the service successfully launches. Napster only works with MP3 files, not allowing other types of files to be exchanged- although there a programs available which "cloak" files to appear to be MP3s, enabling them to be shared on Napster. These players can hold much more music than a CD and the quality of sound is much better.
