Death of a Salesman
Willy Loman is an old, misguided salesman who, because of physical, emotional, and financial desperation, has lost all abilities of deductive reasoning. Willy's world is slowly crumbling. He has a pathetic, tiring, low-paying job. He can barely support himself, and does little more for his family. He has had thoughts of suicide and made plans in that direction. He loves his family, but whenever they are together, they always find a reason to fight. The title, "Death of a Salesman," has unfortunately become significant, as Willy is truly dying the death of a salesman. Willy is burned out. He has lo
Willy is unqualified for his position, but was able in the past to make up for this lack by using personal favors to his advantage. Willy contradicts himself, saying "We've got quite a little streak of self-reliance in our family. " The reader knows that Willy truly believes everything he says and has become unable to perceive the flaws in his thinking. st his contacts in the business world, and has trouble selling anything to anyone. His long hours on the road are torturous, and he can find no escape. Finally, in Willy's exclamation that "it's all cut and dried, and there's no chance for bringing friendship to bear-or personality," both Howard and the reader understand that Willy is not capable of being a salesman. Now that the world no longer accepts poor quality, Willy cannot survive. Howard is a demanding boss and is able to see the irony that Willy takes for the truth. Willy's only options are death and seeking help, and he is too proud to ask for aid. In Willy's account of Dave Singleman's story, Dave is a well-loved man who dies an honorable death. I thought I'd go out with my older brother and try to locate him, and maybe settle in the North with the old man. In his appeal to Howard, Willy loses everything. The death of a salesman is complete. The reader, however, is able to see through the lines and determine what actually happened: Dave Singleman, a lonely, unloved man, was too worn-out to travel and sell, and finally died the pathetic death of a tired bachelor.
