"Jane Eyre....a Woman of Independent Means" Charlotte Brontes, Jane Eyre is a novel which employs manythemes. Of them all, Jane the main character, displays a strongcharacter trait of being an independent woman. For example, Jane hasan ability to survive in life as a woman with little education and nofamily. Living with a distant family who shows disrespect and hatred forJane, she is isolated into a world of her own. She receives little education,but many experiences at her first school Lowood and eventually goes onto become a governess. Also, as a wife in the 1800's most women werethe ones being taken car of. However, Jane was the one taking care of her It is childhood where Jane is first on her own in life. Jane was anorphan being taken care of by her mothers brother, Mr. Reed, and his notso loving family. After the death of Mr. Reed, Janes life begins to slowlyworsen for her. Life at Gateshed, the Reeds' estate, is hard for Jan


Rochester at Thornfield Hall, she later falls in love with him. Because the three cousins, John, Eliza, and Georgiana constantly harassJane. "It is well I drew the curtain,"thought I; and wished fervently he might not discover my hiding place. Throughout the storyJane struggles to resist the manipulation of others to transform her intotheir own views of who and what she should be like. Rochester Jane is confronted with many challenges inlife. As a married couple in the 1800's; the man is usuallyexpected to take care of his wife. Rochester so she returns to themanor which has burned to the ground in an accident where her loverhad lost his vision and one hand. This love, which Jane never received in the Reedhome was a necessity which helps Janes to reach her independence as aperson. However, in Janes case, she is thestronger one of the two partners and must take care of her handicappedhusband. At times, she is so distraught from her cousins' actions that sheisolates herself from them from them, trying to build an imaginary wallbetween her and her so-called family.
