Lord Of The Flies
Using political terms as an example, a democratic system can be easily changed into a dictatorship because of a small reason whether it be a coup or anything else. In the novel "Lord of the Flies", the children changed from civilized school boys to savages all because of atavism. Atavism either majorly or minorly affected them but either way, it did. At arriving on this uninhabited island, the first characters introduced were Ralph and Piggy. As time went by, it became more and more obvious that Ralph symbolized civilization and Piggy was intelligence. Throughout the book, they pretty much worked together, along with the conch Piggy found, trying to keep order. When Jack was introduced, he led the choir boys who later turned into the hunters. It was unmistakable that he was power hungry. When Roger suggested to have a vote on who ought to be chief, Jack immediately said "I ought to be chief, because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp" (22). Especially after not being voted as chief rather than Ralph, he was disappointed. "...the freckles on Jack's face disappeared under a blush of mortification" (23). Simon was one of the choir boys. He first appeared in the book when he fainted while all the boy
"Only, decided Ralph as he faced the chief's seat, I can't think. He was smart but by the way he was: fat, wore spectacles, had asthma, always whining or complaining about something, no one really listened to him or took him serious. When all the big kids went to go look for the beast and left Piggy back with the littluns, it was getting dark and someone had to go check on Piggy to make sure they were okay and tell him that they'd be back late. Later, after he and Maurice were relieved from fire duty one day, they walked passed the littluns playing a game and instead of walking around and keeping to themselves, Roger walked through like a tornado, destructing everything he passed through with Maurice adding to it from behind. When Ralph marched with Sam, Eric, Piggy, and the conch that Piggy held to Castle Rock to get Piggy's specs back, Piggy proved to be Ralph's guide once again. Ralph moved, bent down, kept a wary eye on Jack. Jack hated them because they were more civilized and smart. He's constantly helping someone out so he pretty much symbolizes a somewhat saint. "This was too bitter for Piggy, who forgot his timidity in the agony of his loss. Piggy's intelligence could only be voiced through Ralph though so if Ralph wasn't around, Piggy would never be able to express himself.
