Gatsby

            "In literature as in life, a character may set a high personal goal. In some ways, such a personal goal may be vary valuable and result in a better life. In other ways, such a goal may make life difficult and result in suffering." I agree with this quote. Somebody's personal goal can make life better in one way and also make it more difficult in another. One character in which suffers and fails but also achieves a better living through his goal is Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. He is a perfect example of a man who sets his personal goals and suffers a great deal because of them but also improves his life. The other character who fits this quote would be Daisy. Daisy is another character who achieves her goal and a better life but also because of this goal suffers in her life too.
             Gatsby achieves his goal of being rich in the novel. His fortune lets him live a better life than what he grew up to. As James Gatz he grew up on a farm in the Mid-West with little to no money. When he achieved his goal as Jay Gatsby he bettered his life he was rich like he always wanted to be. He had multiple cars, a giant house, and plenty of material things filling that house. He threw giant parties, which almost everybody attended. So in this way his personal goal did result in a better life for Gatsby.
             The same goal that gave him his fortune also made his life difficult and made him suffer. He wanted to break through the social class that he lived in into the elite class where the one he loved lived. Not only that he also wanted to steal the woman he loved from her husband and be happy forever. By setting his goal so high Gatsby had a lot of work ahead of him. In fact this work probably found itself to be more than Gatsby could handle. This started the difficulty in his life.
