Michael Gow

In Michael Gow's Away, there are many themes which are relevant to the plot. The most prominent of these are death, communication, the healing power of nature and love. All of these themes have a strong presence in the play and affect each of the characters in their own special way.
Death is an obvious part of the relationship between Coral and Roy, but the theme of death effects more than just this couple. There is also the underlying issue of Tom's imminent death. Because of the nature of his illness and little time left, Tom's parents have not yet told him, as they wish for him to experience as much as possible in the little time he has remaining without the added strain this would put upon him. Vic and Harry are obviously not looking forward to this day, but realize that it is a fact of life, and is going to take place eventually. Each parent tries to protect one an other, by privately discussing some issues with their son.
Even if it is slow, if you could try and still have a good time, look like your having a good time. I'm asking this for your mother. It's for her. Let her see you really enjoying yourself, having a terrific time. ( page14)
Death enters Roy and Coral's life when their much-loved son is conscripted, and is therefore obliged to join the army and fight the war currently taking place in Vietnam. This is where he dies, fighting on foreign soil, away from home and from the love of his family. The way the two remaining members of the family deal with this are very different. Although this incident took place many years ago, the matter is still Coral's main focus. Ever since the death, she has been acting differently, become distant, and has begun to loose touch with reality.
There is a price that has to be paid, of course. And we should all be prepared to pay it. That's if we're prepared to enjoy this high standard of living. (page 23)
