Dr jekyll
How Stevenson creates tension and suspense through out Dr Jekyll and Mr HydeFor many years stories, programmes and films use to capture and sustain there audience by using suspense and tension. The story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is no different; it's a classic gothic thriller so being sinister and mysterious is a prerequisite for this type of story. Like Frankenstein written about 100 years before they both follow the lives of people playing with science and it having dangerous consequences.Stevenson manages to create and sustain suspense and tension by using the settings, giving us clues, cliff hangers and evasion to keep the reader interested. Here are a few of the features that are used in the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. When Mr Hyde assaults some one in the story for example the young girl he trampled at the beginning, the surroundings are usually dark and inaudible like in the chapter story of the door. The surroundings where described as "about three o'clock of a black winter morning" and in the chapter the carew murder case where sir
This cliff hanger makes you think what does he really look like and will he ever be stopped. In the Incident of the letter Mr Utterson and the clerk are talking "Well, sir, returned the clerk, there's a rather singular resemblance; the two hands are in point identical: only differently sloped. The fact that many television programmes use the same features as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde shows that it was one of the pioneers of using tension and proves that tension and suspense is crucial. An example of this in everyday television is in Eastenders when Lisa shot Phil. An example of this in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is at the end of the carew murder case, it says "Only one point, were they agreed; and that was the haunting sense of unexpressed deformity with which the fugitive impressed his beholders. " Mr Hyde maybe trying to avoid being seen but in all the attacks some one is watching, in the story of the door it's Mr Enfield and in the carew murder case it's the maid also it's strange how the fog rolls in when the attack happened enhancing the feeling of darkness and mystery. In search for Mr Hyde Mr Utterson, the lawyer and Edward Hyde are talking and they say "will you let me see your face?" Then Mr Hyde hesitates and gives his address in Soho and then "how did you know me?" "We have common friends, said Mr Utterson. This is all to keep the audience reading by forcing them to read on if they want to find out what happens. " Cliff hangers generally leave the audience guessing they happen at the end of a chapter, scene or at the end of a TV programme but in this case it's the carew murder case. The final way Stevenson maintains suspense is by using evasion. Danvers carew is killed "A maid servant living alone, had gone upstairs to bed about eleven. A fog rolled in over the city in the small hours the early part of the night was cloudless. By changing the subject and not giving answers to important questions the characters are able to withholding important information meaning the reader has to read on to find out what happens. Television programmes must produce some kind of tension to be able attract and sustain an audience in the highly competitive world of television.
