Effectiveness of The Articles Of Confederation
As a revolt against British and early constitutions, America's first national government reflected fears of centralized authority and a possibility of corruption. John Dickinson drafted a proposal for a national government in 1776 which he called the Articles of Confederation. Congress adopted a weaker version of the Articles and had it ratified after the original was finished. The Articles of Confederation provided a partially reasonable and workable transition from the unitary system of British rule to the federal system established under the constitution. The Articles of Confederation adopted a Republican form of government that was quite different from the previous Unitary system of government British had. The Republican government allowed people to vote for representatives to become part of congress and write and make new laws for them. The Articles of Confederation was only partially workable because it did not provide all the things a successful government needs. The Articles were ineffective in this because a Government that cannot pay for its own defense is not a successful Government. If the area had 60,000 inhabitants the area became a State with its own constitution. The states were all paying off their debts in the different forms while Britain wanted one. The Articles Of Confederation was both effective and ineffective to reaching the Federal system under the Constitution. The Central Government could not levy taxes and had no other way of paying off its debts. Each state retained sovereignty, freedom and independence from each other and other nations. The friendships between the states made the states a Unified Nation. In Document C it is discussed between Delegate Joseph Jones and George Washington that the government has not been paying its troops. The farmers in the states were then forced to pay off their own debts in something other than the trading goods they were used to. Each state was able to choose its way to pay off the debts, they could do it with a large tax hike over a few years, or a small bump up in taxes over many years. The Articles Of Confederation were also unsuccessful in the case of Document A and C. If the land had a population of 5,000 males or more, the area was a territorial government with a Governor in Congress. This was the point that made the government decide to replace the Articles.
