Thomas Hobbes
I am presenting Hobbes today a very complex and intellagent man that saw himself as a scientist, philosopher consequently a theorist of civil matter and theologian although he is best known for his works in Political Science. Out of these subject Hobbes emerges as a Materialist, a Mechanistic Emperirist, as well as a Determanist. Hobbes goes in debth on many various subject on humans existance occasionally appering to contradict himself. Unfortantly due to the complexity of his work I myself do not full understand Hobbes theories due to my inability to make time to read and contimplate the vast collection and subjects of Hobbes work. I will however try to best present Hobbes basic philosophies.I. An overview of Hobbes as a personHobbes was born in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England in 1588 during the time of the Spanish Armada. He was born premature and with "natural timidity. Thomas was raised by a wealthy uncle after his father a vicar of Westport, fled to London after being involved in a brawl outside his own church. He entered into Oxford where he studied scholastic philosophy and obtained a bachelor degree.Hobbes became a tutor for the aristoc
Hobbes tries to mix materialism, determinism and free will for the public in statements such as "The sequence of causes leading to a person being blown off a cliff by the wind would be said to have led to an event which was the necessary effect of a series of causes. He believed that absolute sovereignty is the form of government most likely to avoid a return to the State of Nature and that peace is only obtainable under a absolute sovereign. As he stated in one of his early works the Thucydides where he used the great Peloponnesian Wars as an example. HobbesHobbes believed that everything was determined but wavered in this statement possible due to the social pressures of the time. This is reinforced by the sovereign through his ability to punish those who act unjustly which is his duty. In a sumnastion Hobbes believes that a sovereign is the glue that holds society together by maintaining peace and rule. According to Hobbes, people therefore should not be trusted to make decisions on their own. He takes Descartes theories such as deriving I am a consciousness therefore I am conscious. However the people have to engage in contract with each other so they will stand in good light with the sovereign. Hobbes helped revive the idea of the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus: 460-370 BC who believed that everything is comproised of atoms indivisible particles of matter moving through empty space. In 1651 he wrote one of his most famous works the Leviathan. Casting down the ideas of Descartes who believed in two types of being. Towards the end of his life he is persicuted for his beliefs and is prohibted form publishing anymore of his works how every he continues to write and transcribe Homers epic poems into english until his death in 1679 in 1682 Behemoth is published. Hobbes began to travel and his interest in why people allowed themselves to be ruled and what would be the best form of government are very much sparked.
