Plot analysis of the pit and the pendulum

Quite simply, Edgar Allen Poe's, " The Pit and the Pendulum " is the 19th century's first glimpse of a modern day horror story. But unlike modern-day slasher movies and books, Poe creates an actual terror in the minds of his readers. The setting takes place during the Spanish Inquisition, in a prison called Toledo. Our unnamed narrator gives us a first-person limited point-of-view through the tortures and turmoils endured there. The rising action of this story starts when he first was being tried and convicted by a secret panel of Inquisition judges. "I saw that the decrees of what seemed to me was fate were still issuing from their lips." As he was being forced toward the pit, he understood the doom his torturers had in plan for him. As the narrator was bound upon the rack, he thought of a plan to loosen the bandages that bound him. The arm belongs to the French General LaSalle. As he rushed to the pit and the coolness of its well, he realized the very shape of the cell was being changed, closing in on him and his hopes for escape. 63 )And to make matters worse, he was bound to a wooden rack in the direct path of the moving pendulum. As he transfers his pain to prose, he creates a timeless classic that will continue to terrify its readers for years to come. " With the particles of the oily and spicy viand which now remained, I thoroughly rubbed the bandage wherever I could reach it; " ( p. Which leads me to my falling action. The first half of the climax occurs when he discovers the pit, while crawling around his darkened cell. He also noticed there were rats covering the cell's floor eating the last bit of food he had. Ironically the worst torture he had to tackle was that of his own mind working to defeat him. In the climax, the narrator's sense of triumph is brief. 67 ) In closing, " The Pit and the Pendulum " is a gateway into the mind of a troubled Poe.
