Are You There God? It's Me Margaret.Margaret's character is this book displays many examples from Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System Theory. This theory defines the layers of environment to have an effect on the development of a child. The first layer of Bronfenbrenner's structure of environment is the microsystem. Margaret's family, school, and neighborhood are all various Microsystems she lives within. Margaret's family consists of her mother Barbara, daddy Herb, grandma Sylvia, grandma and grandpa Hutchins. Her mom's family are Christians and her dad's family are Jewish. ( pg.35) Margaret was in Mr. Benedict's sixth grade class with Gretchen, Nancy, Janie, Moose, Laura, and Philip. ((Pg. 26) Margaret and her family moved from New York to Farbrook, New Jersey. (Pg. 1) S
Hutchins disowned their daughter Barbara for marrying Herb. he moved to a neighborhood where her friends and neighbors either go to the Y or the Jewish Community Center. This is when there is a connection in Margaret's microsystem. Now, Margaret struggles as she tries to find what religion she wants to belong to. Everybody in her neighborhood goes to the Y or to the Jewish Community Center. In her exosystem, her parents relocated to a different neighborhood where religion played a big role in their society. She didn't feel like she was a real person with real feelings so, she let them know she was through with God and her journey to finding a religion right for her. Margaret does communicate with God in her own way by writing to him with her thoughts and concerns. 134) Margaret's actions and feelings show she can be identified through Bronfenbrenner's theory. 122 -126) They came and saw her and left because the issue about religion came up and they started to argue.
