Isa Kremer: The Poeple's Diva
For this assignment I chose to attend one of the many woman's films movies that is played at the cline library on Thursday nights. The night that I chose to attend, a film about a folk singer named Isa Kremer was scheduled to play. At first I thought, "What was I about to get myself into!" However, I was surprised how interesting her life turned out to be. Isa Kremer was born in 1887. She grew up singing songs and had a lovely voice. Her voice soon gained her many accommodations from those who heard her. She soon became well known and started to sing all over the world. However, Isa Kremer was not only a singer, she was a pioneer in her own right. She was the first person to ever sing Yiddish on a concert stage. Not only was she the first, she refused to let any one stop her from singing it. On many occasions, she would show up to a concert and be told that she wasn't allowed to sin
Everyone in the film who talked about their marriage said that they were more friends than lovers. " She always sang, even in front of Nazi officers in the middle of WWII. However, in my eyes it seemed as if she was a very selfish woman. She talked about her the way a star-struck fan would talk about a celebrity. So, while I think that Isa Kremer was a heroic woman and a pioneer of her time, I also think that she was a self-absorbed and selfish person who cared more about the glitz and the glamour of the stage than she did about getting to know her own daughter. It was obvious in the way that her daughter spoke about her that she hardly knew her mother. It was a marriage of convenience for both of them. Her response time and time again was, "I sing Yiddish or I don't sing at all. She hardly had enough time in her busy life to even get to know her daughter. I had a very mixed reaction to this film or should I say to the way that Isa Kremer lived her life. While she did go to extreme length to help her family escape and free her husbands, I got the impression that she did it out of pity more than out of love because as soon as they were safe again, she was back in her own self-consumed world. She now had to sing in order to make ends-meat and she was now having trouble packing concert hall like she once did with ease.
