DBQ US History
The British Colonies began to develop a great sense of identity by mid-1700. It was mainly due to new duties enforced by the British Parliament; British colonies, however, opposed them. British colonies found out that reconciliation was not possible. There was not any other way but independence. Independence would have never been achieved without a vital unity and a great sense of identity. Although British colonies thought that they were individual colonies and tried to separate themselves from each other, they were judged same and attacked same in time of battle. Somewhat ironically, this achievement of unity was started by the British. At the sign of potential war against France and the native Americans, the British government summoned an intercolonial congress to Albany in 1754. Benjamin Franklin addressed his concerns about colonial unity in an artistic way. In Document A, the snake is split into individual pieces and are thus powerless. The colonies could only survive war if they were to 'Join' and unite as on
Colonies were also united to enforce the Nonimportation Act, which prohibited importation from Britain. Colonists shouted of 'no taxation without representation. However, once they realized the unjust obligations demanded by Britain's taxation policies, they were willing to unite under on Congress to petition the King and demand their independence. ' Colonies were very dependent on the Britain while going through the French and Indian war. " It suggests that such mixture of bloodlines does not exist anywhere else. In conclusion, although the unity eventually helped Americans to get independence from England, it acually was started by England. It states, "What them is the American, this new man? He is either an European, or descendant of an European, hence that strange mixture of blood which you will find in no other country. But the nation was still missing its identity. Colonies saw themselves as individual colonies and tried to separate themselves at first. However, Document D suggests the opposite. Document F also suggests that there are some people who were happy and had everything they needed under control of England. With comtribution from the letters from an American Farmer, their identity was found and defined as being a mixture of blood. They rather have one tyrant than many tyrants. The congress was beginning to act more like a central government for the colonies.
