Our Right to Privacy

             In "Privacy Under Attack", Simson Garfinkel claims that the government is threatening our privacy because they have an "anti-privacy agenda." He also contends that sophisticated technology has enabled the government to violate our privacy by gaining access to personal information. Since the events of September 11th, homeland security has been subjected to much debate because the government proposes many security measures that infringe on our civil liberties. According to Lorraine Woellert, author of "National Ids Won't Work", the proposal of a national ID card will violate our "constitutional freedoms." She points out that putting biometric data on a national ID card will be expensive and flawed. Americans' personal and business information is readily available to the government and other private sectors because computer networks share data. Most Americans are unaware that their personal information is being accessed by millions of people through the Internet or other forms of sophisticated technology. Because the government has passed the patriot act and practices other security measures, Americans' personal privacy and constitutional rights are in peril. Three security measures that may violate or already infringe on our rights and privacy are: national ID cards with biometric data, security clearance and surveillance at work, access to library and computer records by the FBI.
             First, a proposal for a national ID card that is technologically sophisticated is being demanded as a way to counteract terrorism. The government already uses digital fingerprinting, and handprint scans, electronic retinal scans, and other biometric technologies as alternatives for government identification purposes.
