Gun Control: Victory or Failure
This paper will attempt to discuss the various issues surrounding gun control, the positive and negative aspects of it. It will also discuss gun control measures already in place, and their efficacy, as well as the delicate balance between protecting the public and ensuring that individual rights remain intact. It will also discuss in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, the screening requirements the United States requests for the purchase or possession of guns, and how society feels about gun control. A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. (Bill of Rights)The words listed above have, and continue to be, interpreted in many different ways. Some think that this statement affords only the military the right to keep and bear arms while others insist that this right should flow to all citizens of the United States of America. In general, society does not want to feel as if they must arm themselves for protection and to feel safe. The media has also been responsible for encouraging the negative viewpoints of gun usage in the United States. "It is the morals and lawful behavior of individuals which needs to be addressed in our society, not that of the gun makers" (Brenkert, 1999). "Gun Control will only provide a false sense of security to our society. They are one of the leading advocates of gun rights and favor the right to bear arms. The gun is only the symptom and the real problem needs to be treated and cured. Of course this doesn't mean all persons denied purchases were prevented from obtaining a firearm by other means, or that they were stopped from committing a crime with a different or no weapon. If someone wanted to break into my home they could be shot as soon as they walked into the house. Since the enacting of the Gun Control Act of 1968 there have been many attempts to restrict and even outlaw access to firearms, particularly handguns. They should also be responsible enough to make sure that they have the safety on and have these weapons locked up when they are not in use. Rarely do the media depict news stories that show how guns have helped or saved a life. The most popular supporter groups today are the National Rifle Association also known as the NRA.
