Happiness in Brave New World compared to our Country
In Huxley's fictional Brave New World happiness is equated with sex, drugs, and non-freedom, in our contemporary country, we can have happiness with out all of those things. In Brave New World sex is one of the primary sources of happiness (along with soma). Brave New World promotes promiscuous sex, and is very against having just one sexual partner (Aid). People aren't very accepting towards feelings in Brave New World, so when ever they feel depressed, sad, or some type of undesired feeling, they take a drug called soma. Freedom in Brave New World society is totally abolished; they do not have freedom of choice, speech, religion, and thoughts (Happiness). In our country promiscuous sex is looked down upon, and if someone is participating in it, then it is usually because they are in a serious relationship with someone, and is limited to only one partner. Drugs are not taken by everyone, people in our society deal with everyday emotions; we do not try to escape the reality and stress of life. Fortunately we have freedom of speech, religion, thoughts, feelings, and your beliefs. The government does not decide what you believe in, say or think. There is no conditioning, you like what you want to like, and dislike what you want to.
If one wants to get rid of an addiction, then there are programs that they can join to help them get ride of these addictions. She ended up forgetting her soma, and could not deal with the reservation with out it. Getting married is something that you can also do, and you have the choice to get married or stay single. Freedoms in Brave New World are very different from our country, our country fought and died for the freedoms we have today, and in Brave New World they don't want freedom. Since all marriages aren't successful, then it is not allowed, because it may bring other feelings other than happiness. One of the only freedoms people have in Brave New World, the ability to refuse to take soma. Teens do not have to have sex at a young age; again they can chose to wait if desired. You can believe in different kinds of gods, and have a completely different religion than anyone else. Marriage is another thing that people can not choose in Brave New World, because marriage can bring troubles and numerous feelings towards one person. "Lenina is a good example of the use of soma, when ever she is feeling uneasy or sad she takes tablets of soma. Sex is considered "socially constructive", and love, marriage, and parenthood are considered obscene and not thought of.
