Ariel and Caliban - Individual Destiny In William Shakespeare's The Tempest, the former Duke of Milan,Prospero, is marooned on a desert island. While on the island, he catches twoslaves named Ariel and Caliban. Sharply different in both body and mind, theirdifferences in character control their ultimate destiny. Ariel is portrayed as anairy spirit who is faithful and close to Prospero and Caliban is a resentful beastwho dislikes Prospero. This leads to Ariel gaining his freedom and Calibanremaining a prisoner of the island on which he was born. Ariel is Prospero's "brave spirit" (Shakespeare 737). Throughout the play,he is the symbol of goodness and obedience. He is rescued by Prospero afterbeing captured by Sycorax and is extremely loyal to him thereafter. He can fly, play magical music, misdirect people, and turn invisible. There is an underlying respect that Prospero has for Caliban, however, he neverexpresses it. There is no trust in their relationship. Thus, no matter who you are, it is your actions that control you for eternity. Prospero treats him with respect and even agrees to grant him his freedom. This is due to the fact that Caliban raped Miranda, his daughter. Arielperforms every task his "great master" asks him to (Shakespeare 737). Prosperosays, "In mine own cell till thou didst seek to violate the honor of my child"(Shakespeare 743). Since Ariel was a civilized, obedient spirit, he was released. This is due to his constant whining and resentful attitude towards Prospero. Ariel is the only one who gainsit because he is close with Prospero. The son of Sycorax, he is an original inhabitant of the island and believes that itbelongs to him. d without a grudge or grumblings" (Shakespeare 739).
