Descriptive essay
The most significant and meaningful ritual in my life is Christmastime with my family. The whole season is considered a magical time of year and there is no arguing that in my eyes. Nothing is more perfect than my whole family joining together for two fun, but busy days, to celebrate the holiday with food, presents and mostly just each other's company. The festivities usually start two weeks before Christmas when my father brings home the Christmas tree. My brother and I are in charge of setting up the tree in our living room and stringing up the lights, all the while being pricked with the tiny pine needles. My mom decorates the tree when we are done and she always is running out to show us the ornaments that we decorated when we were in second grade, that she still continues to hang on our tree every year. Next is decorating the outside of the house, which is always a fiasco, especially when it is below zero degrees outside. There always seems to be a string of lights that is not working, even though they lit
There is nothing more enjoyable than sharing Christmastime with the people you love the most. Midnight mass is wonderful at my Church because that is when the bell choir plays. I love to sneak in to grab a taste of the gravy simmering on the stove. The delectable aroma of my dad's famous mussels rises from the pot, which can only mean dinner is right around the corner. Everything is so much more delicious when it is forbidden. My Nana comes over to help my mother in the kitchen preparing food for that night and for tomorrow. After dinner it is time to get ready for midnight mass, which we have been attending every year since I gave up believing in Santa Claus. When I step inside the house from the chilling December air, my mom is playing Christmas carols on the stereo, like she has done year after year. The tradition of preparing for the Christmas season and the celebration itself is something to look forward to every year and it is something I hope to carry on with my own family one day. Once all the presents are opened, it is about time for my most favorite part of our Christmas tradition-the Christmas feast. Someone is usually nominated to say grace, and then we all dig in. All the while we were opening our presents, my mother and Nana were running back and forth into the kitchen to prepare dishes and check on the turkey. Hearing them chime out "O' Come all ye Faithful" on their bells is almost enchanting. There is the occasional ohhs and ahhs as we see what the others have received, and by the time all the presents are opened and the wrapping paper is all picked up off the floor, it is about time for my Uncle's family to come over to our house.
