Savage garden Affirmation

The song Affirmation is written and performed by Darren Hayes (lead and back up singer) and Daniel Jones (keyboard, synthesisers and drum and rhythm programming). They are better known to the world as the Australian pop group Savage Garden. Some of the poetic devices that are used throughout the song are rhyme and repetition. The film clip shows many different messages throughout it such as love, hate, peace and war.The words in the song Affirmation are strengthened by the visual effects of the film clip. Without the film clip the words to the song don't have the same effect they do with it. Although some of the lyrics are sometimes hard to understand or interpret, the visual effect makes their meaning easier. This type of video clip was very effective as it was able to expand the viewer's understanding and perception of the song. The major theme throughout the whole song is truth, hope and life. All the themes are connected in some way to each of the visual and sound devices used in the song. The beginning of the clip shows a film reel and then the images appear but they seem to be in black and white. The clip then progresses into colour, which shows the advances in technology over the past century.

As well as this most obvious link between his speech and the repetition of words there is another connection. In his speech Martin Luther King repeats the very famous words, "I have a dream" and "I believe" just the same way as Savage Garden have used "I believe" in their song. The combination of these techniques reinforced the major theme of truth, hope and life, expanding the viewer understanding and perception of the song. It is suggesting that it doesn't matter what you look like all that matters is what is inside. This is supported by the famous picture of a man dancing down a street at the end of World War II. There are more lyrics, which are supported like this throughout the song such as, "I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned". " This is the same message that Martin Luther King was trying to get through. This is saying that you don't really know what peace feels like until you've experienced war. After it rewinds the film burns up and is sadly lost forever this represent the loss of all the events over the last one hundred years. Apart from Hitler and Martin Luther King there were many more famous and significant people shown such as, Mother Teresa, Ghandi, JFK and JFK Jr, and Einstein. Of course there are many more people who are shown in the clip. This is shown through an image of the crowning of a beauty pageant winner, Marilyn Monroe and the Hollywood sign along with the words "I believe that beauty magazines promote low esteem". As the song starts, the first image after the film reel is that of Martin Luther King, which coincides with the words "I believe". The effect of this is the viewer automatically reads it so the message is received without the viewer really trying. The visions displayed and the song playing are amplified by the use of words superimposed on the images.
