Evaluation Of The Play Blood Brothers By Willy Russel
Evaluation Of The production Blood Brothers The production I went to see was Blood Brothers. The version I saw was performed at the Regent Theatre and written by Willy Russell it was a scripted piece and was written for young adults as some concepts would be unsuitable for children. We watched this production because we recently performed this ourselves & could compare the two.The production is set in Liverpool and was written in the 1980s.The production effectively shows the barrier between the different classes of people basically it is about two twins seperated when young one going to a rich family one going to a poor family, the poor mother mrs johnstone would like the twins to be friends whilst the rich mrs lyons is just as opposed the twins mickey (poor) & Eddie (rich) later meet & become good friends or "blood brothers" the play is a comedy & is also quite sad as at the end they both die, which is predicted by a dark narrater all the way through. the themes of this play are : love, superstition, class & friendship.I feel one of the main reasons why this production has been so successful is the audience enjoy watching how the characters relate to each other, as their very contrasting characters fuse. At the age of sev
Mrs johnstone in the play i saw was the poorest character being too melodramatic & slightly takes you out of the feeling the play is real, she goes through great lengths in her life to keepsafe her children through everything that happens to her. There were quite a few issues that stood out from the story line. lights :spotlight : used with mrs johnstone when she speaks to the audience about her thoughts or frame of mind when she trys to hide things from the other actors, it isolates her from the other actors & reminds us she is alone. the whole stage is lit, which feels more comfortable as opposed to the shadows & dingy atmosphere of city life. This distances him from the actors who never actually communicate with him but are stil affected by his presence this gives him a mystical "aura", I personally think the narrator is the best thought out character as he acts on two levels the second being his ability to add things that the other cast would not be able to act, such as being a conscience taunting them, he shows the actors inner selves & their weaknesses this creates dramatic irony. Although the meetings between the two boys are strange, they aren't quite coincidences. A significant prop that was used in the production was the locket Mrs Johnstone gave to Eddie to remember her and Mickey as she thought they were never going to meet again. General Wash : in the city scenes the lighting is quite dull to show a poor quality, though when they go the countryside it is lighter to show a better quality of life, though we soon know this is not true. He is a constant reminder of the coming death & dismay even when the play has an upbeat feel to it. Mickey brought his armchair and Mrs Johnstone brought her brush on to show the audience her occupation as a house cleaner, and when the scene was over they took these props with them. He may act like this to show that he has not been brought up around people of his own age, and he doesn't really know how to relate to anybody but his parents. they give an optimistic impression of the life they live. The narrator appeares to the audience in a black suit like he is at a funeral, always in the shadows or an out of the way spot. Sound :in the countryside there was a cockeral crowing in the background but quite peaceful, in the city the sounds were more severe, there is an eerie ambient sound in the background when mrs lyons goes mad.
