Blind Fate
In life there are many truths know one can deny or these proofs such as everyone must die someday or human needs oxygen to survive. However, there are some things in life that we as human try to deny or runaway from. In Sophocles “Oedipus the King” Oedipus tries to change his destiny and is blind to his reality. This story is a perfect example that everyone will for fill his or her destiny in life and the truth is not always easy to neither see nor accept. Oedipus, who is king of Thebes, rose to power after solving the great riddle of the Sphinx, which haunted the city. He marries Jocasta, who unknown to him is his birth mother, and is crowned king. The city of Thebes is inflicted with many problems. The city “Thebes is dying.” (31) because there is “A blight on the fresh crops/ and the rich pastures, cattle sicken and die/ and the women die in labor, children stillborn, /and the plague.” (32-34). In order to restore the Greek gods favor in the city of Thebes Oedipus sends Creon, who is his brother-in-law and his uncle, to see the prophet Apollo. Apollo tells him in order to save the city they must find out who murdered the last king, Laius. Laius and his men are murdered at the three-way crossroad supposedly by “thie . . .
As Oedipus discovers the truth from the servant, Jocasta realizes the horrible truth that the prophecy has been fulfilled. Unknown to Oedipus is the fact the Polybus, king of Corinth, and Menope, a Dorian, are not his birth parents. Oedipus is infurerate by Tiresias accusations. Two major symbols in the story of Oedipus name, which means swollen foot and the mark left on his leg symbolizes his fate. Ironically, the same fate he tried to escape his fate is the same fate he late fulfills. After discovering her hung body Oedipus he takes her pins and gnarl out his eyes cause himself to become blind. No matter how hard one try in life to be or become someone else what is meant to be in life will be. ves” (138) and “a whole band, not single-handed” (130) killed the king. Tiresias did not want to reveal his vision to Oedipus. Oedipus knows he killed a man fitting Laius and his army description at a three-way crossroad, which symbolizes a crucial moment. Laius binds the boy’s legs and has the servant throw him away but the servant gives the baby to Polybus, who raise him as his own. Each path has different destiny, which has different consequences. The reaction of many people is to runaway from their problems. He found out he couldn’t handle it and made himself blind.
