In the book When the Legends Die by Hal Borland, Tom isinfluenced by many people and their ideas. As his settings change,new things influence him to change his personality. The threemain influences on Tom are his mother Bessie, Red Dillon and His biggest influence out of everyone would be his motherBessie. She taught Tom about the old ways, how to fish, chant andweave baskets. Basically she him everything he knows. As well asteaching Tom all these things she taught him to be self sufficient.Eventhough she had 13 years with her son, she gave him a beliefin his indian ways that would come back again l
He pushedTom farther away from his history. In conclusion in the book When the Legends Die by HalBorland, the main character Tom was influenced by a lot of peopleand had alot of choices that would change his life. Tom knew these things were wrong but it stayed in hisroutine. He made himforget about where he was from and his goals for life. Red tested Tom to his fullest and pushed Tom to workharder. At the end of this novel when he goes back to the old ways, it'sreally a way for him to thank her for everything she provided himwith. She changed his thinking on what he was goingto do when he go out of the hospital. Unfortunatley Red did not work quite as hard as Tom andeven got Tom to set a deadfall on one of his rides. The three mainpeople were Bessie, Red Dillon and Mary Redmond. She was the only person that was in the hospital whotruly cared for him. Red Dillon was the total opposite of Bessie. He really found himself at the end of the novel and found hispurpose in life. At first he wanted to go backto riding but decided to take some time off. He wasinfluenced by them to make certain decisions and actions thatwould affect him for the rest of his life.
