Learning disability

Many people pass by people or children with learning disability without notice. Unlike other disabilities like paralysis and blindness a learning disability is a hidden handicap. Students with learning disabilities go to work, attend college and vocational school and live a productive life. Many people believe that children with learning disabilities are lazy and don't want to learn. That's not true. Many students do not know what they are capable of and are scared to admit they have a learning disability. They feel like people will look down on them. One in five children have some type of learning disability according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Learning disability is a broad term that can cover many disorders. According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities a learning disability is defined as a disorder that interferes with a person's ability to store, process, or produce information. It creates a gap between one's ability and ones ability to perform. Children with learning disabilities are sometimes thought to be unprogressive or may not achieve as well as they should at their age level in school. They are usually average children who experience extreme difficulty in learning how to read or to d


Due to The individuality, accommodations may vary among students. Insuring each child receive the best education possible is a never-ending task yet it is one each teacher takes on when she or he enters the classroom. Therefore, teachers are often the first to observe a child's persistent difficulties in mathematics reading or writing and must be knowledgeable about what to look for and how to identify a learning disability. Learning disabilities on the other hand has a varying broad term that covers an array of possible causes, symptoms, and treatments and outcomes. Many learning disabilities are not noticed until a child enters school (council for learning, 1999). Another aspect that separates a learning disability from other disabilities is that currently the cause is unknown. The last categories known as other learning disabilities, the most commonly know are the attention disorders. Is some recent research they have discovered a difference in the brain structure and functioning of readers with learning disabilities but this is only the beginning. The first category is developmental speech and language disorder. Learning disabilities maybe hereditary, taratogenic, medical, and environmental factors (National Institute of Neurological disorders and Stroke, 2001) that cause this disability. Reading disorders are believed to effect 2% to 8% of all elementary school children (International Dyslexia Associated, 1999). After the child has been evaluated an individualized education program is created. It is a teacher's responsibility to implement the goal and objective of an individualized education program in the classroom. There are several different strategies that may help children to succeed academically. By having the ability to notice when there appears to be a gap in a child's intelligence and the skills she or he has achieved.
