Two kinds: Response to Amy Tan

             It seems to me that in Amy Tan's point of view, people see Chinese having offspring growing up as child prodigies. In Tan's story, "Two Kinds," child prodigies aren't always born in a Chinese family. This story is about a time in Amy Tan's life, going through conflicts with her mother about Amy's future. Tan recalls on her mother having big hopes for her. She wanted to speak very highly of Amy to all of her friends. Her mother had very high expectations. Her mother took Amy to beauty school, so she could get her hair done and look pretty like Shirley Temple. Her mother probably thought appearance would give Amy confidence to succeed. Then she took Amy to Ballet lesson. Soon in her mother's eyes, Amy would be the perfect child. What she didn't know this was Amy's discovery of disaster. Throughout Amy's childhood, she realized being a prodigy was tough, and she didn't want to commit to being one anymore. Amy's mother also forced her to take piano lessons, but practice for Amy was boring. Amy stilled tried to keep her mother happy by displaying her work on the piano at a talent show. The show was a "bomb" and Amy completely played every note wrong.
             Thus, brings the discovery that Amy didn't want to play piano anymore. Unfortunately, her mother was angered and disappointed. Years has past and Amy's mother dies, and Amy decides to play the piano again.
             I felt I was in the same position as Amy. My parents were always discipline when it came to school. I had to get "A's" on my report card. It brought so much pressure to me. School became harder and stressful. Once I began high school, I became actively involved in clubs and after school activities. I became so busy that I didn't make much time to study.
