Observation report
On Tuesday October 5, 2004 I observed a third grade classroom In Rumson, New Jersey. I visited Holy Cross Catholic School in Rumson which houses students from Pre-K to eighth grade. On this day I sat in on a third grade class taught by my mother, Mrs. McConville. She had graduated from Monmouth University with a degree in English and Education. Since then she has been teaching for 26 years, 17 of those years have been at Holy Cross. The class that I was observing held twenty-one students. The arrangement of the desks was centered on Mrs. McC's desk in the front of the classroom. She had two desks: one desk which was for her personal things in the back of the classroom and another table/desk which she spent most of her time that was located at the front of the classroom. Behind her desk was the chalkboard, which was actually the center of the classroom. Every lesson that I was present at the students followed off of the chalkboard. Mrs. McC wrote many things out for the students so that they could see what they were learning. During my observation I was looking around the classroom so I could really take in the setup. There were five different centers that I had noticed: math, prayer, art, computer and a library. T
McConville had reacted was by stating, "Boys and girls if we do not finish this story today then we aren't going to get a chance to finish it tomorrow. In my classroom if I have a problem with a student that will cause me to remove them from class I would give the remainder of the class a task to complete while I handle the situation outside the class. The girls in the class weren't having as many problems as the boys were. In certain situation that I was present for students would disobey the rules by calling out or getting out of their seats. he classroom was colorfully decorated. The teacher explained to me that when the children misbehaved there was time that was taken off of their recess time at lunch. She had already had several meetings with the two students already this year. There was never an instance where I saw a student act out wild enough for a disciplinary action to occur. For example, at one point during the students reading lesson they were beginning to get very excited over their story. In the classroom that I was present at, there were two students who were on medication for A. She had said that a lot of the parents of these children do not want to have their children classified so instead of having and IEP written, the parents just take the students to their pediatrician and that is where they are diagnosed with a learning problem and just put on medication. McConville was to follow with these students so handled it her own way.
