"The Downing Sun: Jim Casy Vanessa Cromer JohnSteinbeck passionately describes a time of unfair poverty, unity, and the human spirit in the classic, The Grapes ofWrath. The novel tells of real, diverse characters whoexperience growth through turmoil and hardship. Jim Casy-a personal favorite character- is an ex-preacher that meetsup with a former worshiper, Tom Joad. Casy continues arelationship with Tom and the rest of the Joads as theyembark on a journey to California in the hopes of prosperityand possibly excess. Casy represents how the manysituations in life impact the ever-changing souls of human-beings and the search within to discover one's true identityand beliefs. Casy, however, was much more complex thanthe average individual. His unpredjudiced, unified, Christ-likeexistence twists and turns with every mental and extraneousdisaccord. Jim Casy is an interesting, complicated man. Hecan be seen as a modern day Christ figure, except withoutthe tending manifest belief in the Christian faith. The initials ofhis name, J.C., are the same as Jesus Christ. Just as Jesuswas exalted by many for what he stood for was supposed tobe , Casy was hailed and respected by many for simply
Society wantedto keep the migrants moving, leaving it impossible for themto organize. Maybe all men got one big soulever'body's a part of. Thanks to Jesus, thesaddest, dullest existence has had its glimpse of heaven. He believes in unity and that becausepeople are all part of something greater than themselves, weshould help one another out, and work together becauseotherwise we are all lost. Even Casy himself had trouble speaking at all:"Now look, Tom. Heattempted to organize the migrants but saw great difficulty. They's stuff goin' on that these folksis doin' that don't know nothin' about- yet. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to himthat is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to helphim up. He feels like he iscontending with the very ideals he has spread to others-traditional ideals of God and Jesus. you ain't said ten words the las' couple days, "Tom said. Casy's attempts at organizing failed not only because thepeople cared specifically for what was happening at thepresent time, but also because they were afraid to organize. Casy believes you should do what you feeland doesn't believe in right or wrong. " Jim Casy was similar to Jesus Christ but hispersonality traits did not end there.
